The philosophy behind the McLaren F1 road car was simple - to build the finest driver's car ever built, or ever likely to be built.
The McLaren F1 set a new benchmark in supercar design, delivering outstanding performance and handling as a result of intelligent engineering and the most cutting-edge Formula One technology at the time.
As the world's first production road car to feature an all carbon composite monocoque and body structure the F1 heralded a new era in the transfer of Formula One technology to the road. The extensive use of carbon fibre among other lightweight materials kept overall weight very low to improve handling and performance and yet provided exceptional strength and unsurpassed levels of safety.
The F1 was powered by a BMW S70/2 engine, specifically designed and built for the car. This 6.1-litre, quad-cam, 48-valve V12 produced 627 horsepower, driving through a bespoke six-speed transaxle gearbox. This engine powered McLaren to victory at Le Mans on its debut in 1995 and to several FIA GT championships.
The F1 also pioneered radical design features that contributed to the unique driving experience; these included a central driving position for optimum visibility, dihedral doors for easy ingress and egress, active aerodynamics and 'ground-plane shear' suspension geometry for exceptional vehicle dynamics.
It was an entirely uncompromised approach to engineering the very best supercar, one which only McLaren could make.
